Sometimes there is an event or way of thinking that influences fashion dramtically. Nothing could be better said that that of the woman's zouave jacket from the Civil War era.
Zouaves were actually Moroccan volunteer units in the French army, commonly referred to as the French Foreign Legion. They were considered daredevils and very brave. They caught the attention of America right before the American Civil War broke out and as fashion sometimes does, the idea of the zouave jacket became popular.
The woman's version of the zouave jacket is basically an altered version of the bolero jacket. The pagoda sleeves on this jacket really distinguished it throughout its popularity.
