Beautiful Victorian polonaise style bustle dress. This lovely gown is made from satin and vestment brocade in an authentic Victorian era design. Great for gothic and steampunk events.
This particular dress is a polonaise style from the early 1870's. The polonaise dress began in the late 18th century and was a conscious imitation of a country woman's dress (a shepherdess or milkmaid) and their need to tuck their outer gowns up to keep them clean. The polonaise "look" consists of a gown with a fitted bodice and a cutaway draped or poufed overskirt worn over an underskirt or layers of petticoats. The 1870's polonaise's were poufy at the hips imitating the panniers of the 18th century.
Amazing polonaise design and fabric on this custom made Victorian style Bustle Dress. This is a 3 piece outfit consisting of a bodice (polonaise) and an underskirt with an attached apron. Would be great for any Victorian reenactment event or glorious as a Steampunk ensemble.
The design is a period accurate Victorian dress, 1870's style. Made from a beautiful brocade and satin fabrics.
The polonaise is made from a bridal satin in a coordinating color to your brocade fabric. The bodice has a square neckline which is quite flattering and buttons up the front with glass or covered buttons. The front is cut away and is open to reveal the underskirt beneath. The back is long and falls to the floor in the back. The back has tapes inside to tie up and bustle and these tapes can be adjusted for fit. The back has three peplums to add a lovely design to the back of the polonaise.
The sleeves are 2 piece and fitted at the top of the shoulder and are straight to the wrist. The whole polonaise is trimmed with a matching cord trim and a coordinating ruffle. Because this is basically a dress over a skirt it produces a very slimming effect which is always desirable. Top portion of the bodice is lined and inner lined to give the bodice some structure but the bottom is left unlined to pouf gracefully when the inside tapes are tied and bustled. All seams are finished.
The underskirt is made from a gorgeous brocade fabric and is of a basic 5 gore design. It is flat in the front with the skirt width pleated into the back gore to help accomodate the bustle. The skirt has a waistband and closes with a hook and bar closure. There is a 4" pleated ruffle on the bottom of the underskirt. Underskirt is unlined but is french seamed so as not to leave any exposed edges.
The apron is attached to the underskirt at the waist and is made from the same fabric. It is pleated at the sides to give it a nice "bustled" effect at the front. There is a 4" ruffle in a solid coordinating color at the bottom of the apron. This little touch helps tie the outfit together as a beautiful ensemble. The fact that it is attached to the waist gives you less worry of your front apron shifting thus keeping the line of the dress.

This outfit is reminiscent of the early bustle period (early 1870's) so it should be worn with period undergarments including a bustle. This will give the outfit a more period look.
