Beautiful Victorian bustle mourning dress in cotton twill. Not just for mourning either. Gothic inspired in black you are sure to be a hit in this gown at Steampunk or Victorian events.
This style of bustle dress is from the later period of the Victorian Bustle Era. This period roughly runs from 1882-1889. The characteristic feature of this period is the large and more severe bustle in the back. Many newspapers of the time ran sketches of the "look" making fun of the large posterior...lol.
The later bustle period had a much different look from the earlier bustle period. The later had minimal drapery to the dress in comparison to the earlier period. It had a slimmer and a more tailored bodice which had a flatter front. There were smaller aprons or no aprons on the dresses and a much less symetrical look.
This dress is of a simple design but it still has a lot of beauty. This dress is made in black to show the "Mourning" Dress option. But it can be made in a variety of colors if you do not like black.
Bodice is tailored and has an attached vest front. Main bodice is made from a cotton twill and is fully lined with a lightweight cotton fabric to match. Bodice is also inner lined to help hold the tailored structure from the time period that is so desirable.
The vest front is made from a lovely black satin with small black embroidery on it. The vest front can also be made in a plain satin or a velvet if you prefer. The color of the vest will match the main fabric of the dress. This adds to the slimming effect of this tailored bodice. There is small piping that seperates the bodice from the vest down the front. This is only a decorative feature as the bodice and vest are attached. There are 2 mandarin band collars at the neck...one is of the main fabric and one is made from the vest fabric. This ties in the bodice nicely. Buttons down the front with satin covered buttons in a matching color. The back of the bodice is pleated and this allows the bodice to fan out over the bustle and does not deter from the line of the dress with any pulling of gaping. Sleeves are 2 piece curved sleeve and fit into the arm with a nice round "puff" giving the shoulder more width and your waist appear slimmer
The skirt is a basic 5 gore design and is made from a cotton twill. It lays flat on the front and the width of the fabric is pleated into the waistband in the back. Again, this allows room to accomodate the bustle. The skirt closes at the side back with a placket and metal hook and bar. Skirt is unlined but is french seamed inside for neatness.
This is just such a lovely and simple design. Would be great to wear to a Victorian event or a Stemapunk Convention.
