Beautiful Polonaise style Victorian dress in a lovely cotton calico fabric. This style is so flattering on any figure type. You would be the hit at your next Steampunk, Victorian or LARP event in this outfit.
This sale will be for a lovely Victorian era reproduction bustle dress, custom made in your size and color choice. This particular dress is a polonaise style from the early 1870's. The polonaise dress began in the late 18th century and was a conscious imitation of a country woman's dress (a shepherdess or milkmaid) and their need to tuck their outer gowns up to keep them clean. The polonaise "look" consists of a gown with a fitted bodice and a cutaway draped or poufed overskirt worn over an underskirt or layers of petticoats. The 1870's polonaise's were poufy at the hips imitating the panniers of the 18th century.
This is a 2 piece outfit consisting of a bodice (polonaise) and an underskirt. I willuse a cotton calico and a cotton muslin in creating this outfit. The dress will trimmed in a cord trim and a matching ruffle trim. This is a great outfit for summer. Very cool and breathable. The polonaise is made from historical patterns, which have been researched and drafted by me and the underskirt is a basic 5 gore design with a waistband. I draft my own patterns using historical guidelines for accuracy. I enjoy doing the research for my creations.
The polonaise is made from a quilters cotton calico in any color you prefer. The neck of the bodice is square which is quite flattering and buttons up the front with faux pearl buttons. The front is cut away and is open to reveal the underskirt beneath. The back is long and falls to the floor in the back. The back has tapes inside to tie up and bustle and these tapes can be adjusted for fit. The back has three plackets to add a lovely design to the back of the polonaise. The sleeves are 2 piece and fitted at the top of the shoulder but puff out at the wrist. The whole polonaise is trimmed with a coordinating cord trim and a coordinating ruffle. I am unable to get the embroidered ruffle trim currently so the ruffle will be a solid color to match the polonaise. Because this is basically a dress over a skirt it produces a very slimming effect which is always desirable. Top portion of the bodice is innerlined to give the bodice some structure but the bottom is left unlined to pouf gracefully when the inside tapes are tied and bustled. All seams are finished.
The underskirt is made from a natural collor cotton muslin and is of a basic 5 gore design. It is flat in the front with the skirt width pleated into the back gore to help accomodate the bustle. The skirt has a waistband and closes with a hook and bar closure. There is a large pleated ruffle on the bottom of the underskirt which is trimmed with the coordinating cord trim from the polonaise. This ties the whole outfit together nicely. Underskirt is french seamed so as not to leave any exposed edges.

Item should be dry cleaned to keep the outfit looking nice for many reenactments. However, because the dress is made from cotton fabrics, dress can be laundered on a gentle cycle. This adds to the versatility of the outfit. This outfit is reminiscent of the early bustle period (early 1870's) so it should be worn with period undergarments including a bustle. This will give the outfit a more period look.
