Victorian polonaise style bustle dress. Long style walking jacket sets this gown apart from the ordinary. Beautiful choice for a Steampunk or LARP event.
This is a lovely Victorian era reproduction bustle dress. I call this my "modified" polonaise. This particular dress is a polonaise style from the early 1870's. The polonaise dress began in the late 18th century and was a conscious imitation of a country woman's dress (a shepherdess or milkmaid) and their need to tuck their outer gowns up to keep them clean. The polonaise "look" consists of a gown with a fitted bodice and a cutaway draped or poufed overskirt worn over an underskirt or layers of petticoats. The 1870's polonaise's were poufy at the hips imitating the panniers of the 18th century.
This is a 2 piece outfit consisting of a bodice (polonaise) and an underskirt. I used a solid cotton and a striped cotton in creating this outfit. This is a great outfit for summer. Very cool and breathable. The polonaise was created using fashion plates from Harper's Bazaar Magazine. I draft my own patterns using historical guidelines for accuracy and researching.
The polonaise (bodice) is modified from the typical polonaise style. The back overskirt has been cut away leaving the underskirt bustling to show. The bodice is fitted to the waist and then opens up and falls away exposing the underskirt in the front. It closes with a row of buttons all the way down the front of the polonaise. This allows you to adjust the look of the bodice quite a bit. Button up or not just as you desire. There ia a cord trim around the bottom edge of the polonaise. The sleeve is a two piece fitted sleeve with a bit of cord trim at the wrist. Back of the polonaise is fitted and ends at the waist. There are 3 decorative plackets that are trimed with coordinating cord trim. Leaving open the bottom of the polonaise exposes the bustled fabric of the underskirt and gives this polonaise a dynamic look. The polonaise is lined with a solid cotton fabric in a coordinating color.
Underskirt is made from a striped cotton fabric. It is a basic 5 gore design with a fitted waistband. The skirt is unlined but seams are french seamed for neatness. It closes at the back with a hook and bar closure. The gores lay flat in the front and all the fabric fullness is at
the back to allow room for the bustle. This style should be worn with a formal bustle underneath to give it the correct look.
